Paranoid interview

We interview Sharon C. Ekleberry, author of Dual Diagnosis and the Paranoid Personality Disorder, on her most difficult experience with a PPD patient.

Abstinence as a prerequisite for treatment may well result in a failure to engage; individuals with PPD resist domination and such an ultimatum may send them into a flight toward autonomy. One patient put it simply, "You can't tell me what to do." Discharge for use is likely to be interpreted as an abuse of power and seriously interfere with the rapport needed for future successful engagement in the treatment process.
